Cinema: The social role of cinema

Project leader: Olesya Koltsova
Project participants: Ksenia Leontieva, Anton Surkov

The project is dedicated to studying the Russian film industry from the perspective of its sociological significance. In particular, the role of film creators as one of the success factors is examined. The project tested to what extent the gender composition of producers, screenwriters, and directors determines the project's access to resources and the gender representation of characters on screen, as well as how audiences react to strong female characters in Russia. During the research, linear multifactor models of film success were formed, the effectiveness of state support and regulation methods for domestic cinema was evaluated, the social climate in film crews was studied, and the social effect of implementing AI methods in film production was examined.

Results were presented at the following conferences:

  • "Gender (im)balance in Russian cinema" at Computational Research in Central and Eastern Europe conference (Helsinki, June 29, 2022)
  • "Gender (im)balance in Russian cinema (on and off-screen)" at the XXIII Yasnaya Polyana International Scientific Conference (Moscow, HSE University, April 6, 2022).
