Summer Schools

School of Interdisciplinary Research in Cognitive and Social Sciences (IRCSS), 25-27 September 2024
The school was organized by the Laboratory of Social & Cognitive Informatics (SCILa)  within the framework of the Mirror Laboratories project of the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg “Perceived communication quality in face-to-face and computer-mediated meetings and its objective assessment using oxytocin and mimic markers". The event is aimed at creating interdisciplinary dialogue in solving scientific and applied problems. The proposed cases included the analysis of behavioral, textual and neurobiological data, half of them involve working with open AI models. The school covered the topics of using LLM models for data labeling and content analysis, formulating measurements of cognitive psychology in the language of computational linguistics, using open AI models to recognize emotions and movements to analyze the human state and the quality of communication in dialogue, and much more.

International Summer School & Conference on Artificial Intelligence, 1-7 July 2024

The school is co-organized by the Department of Informatics and the Laboratory of Social & Cognitive Informatics (SCILa) of HSE university (St.Petersburg campus). ISSCAI will be the first event in a series. 
Participants will have the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the latest advancements and research in the field of artificial intelligence, and will have informal interactions with students, researchers, and industry specialists.
To participate in the event, one must submit an application for competitive selection by 28 May 2024 (15 March for those requiring a visa to Russia).

Summer School in Experimental Methods & Simulations in Social and Cognitive Sciences (EMS-SCS 2021), 13-22 July 2021
From 13-22 July 2021, the Laboratory of Social and Cognitive Informatics hosted an international summer school on experimental methods and modeling in the field of social and cognitive sciences. The training programme involved approximately thirty representatives from diverse fields of science (psychologists, cognitive scientists, political scientists, sociologists, ergonomists, media researchers, etc.) from various countries (Russia, Germany, Italy, France, USA).

Summer School 2017 "WSTNet Web Science Summer School 2017"
The mission of WWSSS is to acquaint participants with theories and methods of studying the World Wide Web as a socio-technical phenomenon. Web Science, as a science of networks, is aimed at interdisciplinary research, thus the school emphasized group practical work involving representatives from various fields, including social sciences, computer science, economics, mathematics, etc.

Summer School 2015 "9th Russian Summer School in Information Retrieval (RUSSIR 2015)"
The ninth summer school, organized by HSE and the Russian Seminar on Evaluation of Information Retrieval Methods, brought together over 140 participants from different countries. Key discussion topics during the event included search models, Internet and social network search, software architecture, content representation and analysis models, text analysis, visual analytics, network analysis, and graph analysis.

Summer School 2013 "Social Network Analysis: Internet Research"
The summer school focused on studying online communities using network analysis methodology. The link between theory and its application was illustrated with examples from contemporary internet research. Seminars and computer practice sessions were dedicated to research design and methods for collecting online data, analysis, and visualization of results. Strong and weak aspects (performance, functionality, and user interface) of various programs widely used for social network analysis were examined.

Summer School 2012 "Social Network Analysis: Methods and Applications"
In 2012, the first international school "Social Network Analysis: Methods and Applications" took place. The event was attended by 25 researchers from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Hungary, USA, Colombia, and Mexico. Participants underwent an intensive course on the fundamentals of network analysis methodology, acquired skills in working with the R programming language, and attended lectures by invited foreign specialists: Martin Everett, Jeroen Bruggeman, Nina O'Brien, and Benjamin Lind.
