Laboratory Seminar on Decision-Making in the Genome Era
On January 10, the first laboratory seminar of the new year was held. The discussion focused on exploring the factors that influence genetic testing decisions in four countries.
Maxim Likhanov (State Key Laboratory of Cognitive Neuroscience and Learning, Beijing Normal University) presented the results of an international project studying genetic literacy and attitudes towards genetic testing among representatives of the USA, Great Britain, Nigeria, and Russia.
The researchers found that more than 80% of people are willing to undergo genetic testing for medical purposes, and about 70% of people are willing to donate DNA samples for scientific research.
A number of factors that influence genetic testing decisions have also been examined, such as the level of trust in research institutions and beliefs about protecting the confidentiality of genetic data.
A recording of the discussion is available at the link.
